2011 Divorce Care Summary and Purpose
What is Divorce Care?
Divorce Care is a cross between a seminar and a recovery group. It is a 13-week Life Recovery Course on healing from the life threatening devastation experienced in the wake of
a divorce. Divorce Care supports participants wherever they are in the hurtful process and prepares them for what they will experience in the future.
What are the Goals of Divorce Care within the Church?
The goal of Divorce Care is to come along side the individual and develop a relationship with them in the midst of their pain, while providing a safe environment for them to reflect, adjust and heal from the “life wreck” they are experiencing. If necessary and if possible, Divorce Care will connect them to one to the pastors at RLM for additional biblical counseling and support.
The second goal is to help the person understand that the only way to receive true healing is through a personal relationship with Christ. After accepting Christ as their Lord and Savior, if they have not already, they will be encouraged to get baptized and continue their growth and healing.
The third goal is for the Divorce Care leader and the participate to recognize (during the healing process) that it is time to move forward by getting plugged into a home group or small group (Recovery, Singles and Single Parent classes/activities, Biblical classes, etc.)
Divorce Care Leaders
Leaders must recognize where the individuals are in their “devastation” process, and what steps they are or are not ready to take. Sometimes it requires going through the course several times to reach the point where they know they are going to be alright
The Process
During the personal healing process, it is important to discourage participants from becoming involved in another relationship; instead, they should stay the healing course by allowing the material and group dynamics provide the support they need. By realizing that divorce is an ongoing process, and not an event to “get over”, they can become a “new” Christ-centered person and avoid becoming “person, place or thing” centered.
Who Leads Divorce Care?
Divorce Care is lead by facilitators who have been through divorce themselves, are familiar with the course material (e.g. have gone through the course one or more times) and have a genuine calling, concern, and heart for those going through the devastating process. These facilitators are far enough in the healing process that they are able to deal with and understand their own divorce. They have the strength(spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and physically) and the time to walk through the healing process alongside those in need. Facilitators are able to relate to individuals and guide them through the process. They must stay on track, stay strong themselves and resist the temptation to become personally involved with individuals going through the healing process.
