Duane and Jackie Anderson
Background: In September 2005, Duane Anderson, an orthopedic surgeon from Coeur d’Alene, and his wife, Jackie, joined the mission of Soddo Christian Hospital in southwestern Ethiopia.
Duane serves as the director of the 120-bed hospital in addition to working as the facility’s sole orthopedic surgeon. At the heart of this ministry is the discipleship process with African physicians and staff. Duane is the interim director of a surgery residency program that aims to equip African physicians both medically and spiritually.

Jackie’s ministry ranges from teaching English to nurses and Bible students to coordinating the stream of volunteers who regularly serve at the hospital. She recently started a school at the hospital for supplemental lessons in English for students ranging in age from elementary to teenagers.
A recent story from Soddo Christian Hospital: Duane recently operated on two brothers who were attacked by robbers with a machete. The men suffered severe hand injuries; one nearly had his thumb severed near the base. The men, both Muslims, stayed at the hospital for about three days.
A hospital chaplain led one of the men to the Lord during his stay and gave a Bible in Amharic. In a follow-up visit about six weeks later, he told Duane that he had won his four immediate family members to the Lord, and he asked the staff to share with his older brother again. They both need physical therapy for their hands, so Duane asked them to stay for a week – for discipleship and physical therapy. He planned to teach the one who had accepted God four biblical stories to share with family, friends and neighbors. If he’s successful, the hospital will ask him to return each month for more discipleship training.
